There are two excursions planned. The first on Wednesday July 2nd to Areley Kings, La3amon's parish, and the second on Friday July 4th to Worcester, ten miles down the Severn from Areley Kings.
July 2nd: after 12.30 lunch, depart Gregynog at 1.15 by coach. Arrival at Areley Kings about 3.15. Visit to Redstone Caves, site of medieval hermit dwellings. Return to Areley for a visit to a simple meal before departure for Gregynog by coach. The meal will cost £7.50, and the coach £12.50 per person (total £20.00). We are hoping that even those of you who have seen Areley already will want to see the caves this time and to enjoy an afternoon's relaxation. The visit is being organised by Andrew and Mary Wehner, who live in Areley Kings.
July 4th: early breakfast (!) and depart by coach at 8.00 a.m. from Gregynog. We aim to arrive in Worcester about 10.15, to visit the Cathedral, founded in AD 680, with a Benedictine abbey as well in La3amon's time. There may be time for coffee before the first tour. From the coach drop-off point in King's Street there is a short walk to the Cathedral Library where from 11 a.m. to noon we will have a tour of the Library by the librarian, David Morrison. Please note: the Library is reached by a spiral staircase of over 40 steps and is not suitable for those with impaired mobility.
At 12.20 we have lunch in the Bishop's Palace, and proceed at 2.30 to the Cathedral for an hour's guided tour. Worcester Cathedral is the place King John chose to be buried because of his devotion to Saint Wulfstan; Henry VIII's brother Arthur is also buried there.
The total cost of this excursion is £32.50, which includes the two tours, the lunch with coffee and the coach fare. Other refreshments are self funding.
The Cathedral has some access for those with disabilities (the Cloisters entrance is the most suitable for the toilets and tearoom) and there is an audio loop if you wish to listen to part of a service. Photography permits cost £3; no photographs during services.
We shall need to leave Worcester promptly at 4.30 pm in order to be back in Gregynog for the evening meal.
Our thanks to Andrew and Mary Wehner for assisting with planning this excursion.
